Starting in the early 2000's, the Marcellus Shale has seen an immense increase in drilling. A new and controversial method of drilling known as hydro-fracking employed throughout much of the the PA portion of the Marcellus formation has allowed for higher gas production as well as contamination issues.

This story shows when and where new drill permits have been approved in PA from 2005 through mid 2012.
